« « Full Night| Point of Style » »Back Home
Well, I’ve been back at home for a few days now. I’ve been working, so only here in the mornings and evenings. Surprising the things you notice. The flat I’ve just left was pretty small. Pretty Goddamn small. The whole thing could fit quite comfortably into my parents’ kitchen area. Consequently, breakfast feels like a lot of work. In my old place, all the necessary paraphenalia of dining were within five feet of each other. I could boil the kettle, make the coffee, get the milk from the fridge, wash the bowl, pour the cereal and watch television without taking more than one step in any direction, perhaps taking a moment to fall onto the couch when the constant swivelling became too tiring. Now, I have to get out of bed, walk to the kitchen, stride over to the fridge, take out the milk, get the kettle, carry it to the sink to fill it, walk into the next room (the next room!) to get a bowl… If i want to watch TV while I eat, I have to undertake a small expedition, down the hall, past the stairs, past the dining room, into the living room – well, you get the idea.
I have persuaded my parents to buy themselves a new computer and get broadband internet access. This is, of course, entirely for their benefit. The computer is from Dell and the broadband will be Netsource SoHo. Sweet technology… Eases the pain…
Once I’ve finally become accustomed to the vast distances between the various points in this massively expansive house I’ll probably start noticing the way I don’t automatically get the remote control and can’t walk around naked and stuff. Come back in a few days.
