Thanksgiving

A , posted by Anthony in the early evening.

Thanksgiving was yesterday, as you may or may not know. This has been more irritating for me than anything, as it’s basically shut everyone down for a week. I need forward movement! That job doing a short in C5 has hit a snag – I may well get to do the short, and others, but it probably won’t be in C5. This is nothing to do with me personally, more of a general shift in the company – unfortunate timing. I’ll still get paid, maybe more than I would have otherwise, but it won’t help me in impressing the powers that be within C5, which was really my primary aim. And I won’t find out anything definite at all until at least next week, because of Thanksgiving. At this rate, it’s looking like I won’t have succeeded in earning a single dime before I come home for Christmas. Grrr! And I’ve been told I’m overqualified for the intern position. Which is true. I’m not sure that it’s a good thing.

I spent Thanksgiving at a hipster type party down the road in another part of Willamsburg. The party was thrown by the girlfriend of a friend of Marilyn and Kim’s. (Kim is the girl who’s moving back into the apartment when I leave. She was spending a few nights here in Liza’s room, as Liza went to Florida to stay with her family for the holiday). It was fun. Didn’t know anybody (obviously) and I’m not quite enough of a hipster myself to seamlessly integrate myself into this kind of gathering (they served both Turkey and Tofurkey, and there was a lot of very expressive hair in evidence, facial and otherwise). Started drinking at four, left at about eleven, had a few interesting conversations, met a few interesting people, life remained unchanged. I did get offered a desktop G4 ProTools Digi001 system for $1000, which is a reasonable deal, but I don’t have the money to spare. If I find I’m going to earn more than that in shorts over the next couple of weeks, and the system checks out, I’ll go for it. Otherwise, I won’t. I applied for an American Express credit card, but I was turned down. I suspect this is because I don’t have a credit rating here yet. Or worse, I do. I need yet another way to accumulate debt – it helps make me feel more American.

This is an interesting article. It was written by Lisa Keyes, Julian’s wife, and the previous inhabitant of my room. It’s a bit of perspective on my position. I’ve been around their flat, helping to hammer nails into things and hang them up in time for the parents’ Thanksgiving visit (a mixed success). Julian is the only heterosexual male I know less into this kind of activity than me, so I almost felt competent.

I haven’t been feeling homesick generally, but a show called Insomiac just showed an old episode where they visited Dublin on St. Patrick’s day, and one of the places they went was the Long Hall. I want a pint of Smithwicks in the Long Hall!

And so to the poll:

7 votes for regrouping and taking New York by storm
2 votes for assuming a new identity and proceeding to fight crime
2 votes for assuming a new identity and committing crime
2 votes for pretending all is well, and writing some bad checks

Hmmm… Time for a new one.

Light

A , posted by Anthony in the early afternoon.

I was feeling a little despondent. Work prospects seemed to have stalled (NYFA aren’t hiring until March, apparently), I had to borrow some money, I was coming down with a cold – but then things started to improve. Firstly, after six weeks of not laying eyes on anyone I’d known …

Social Security

A , posted by Anthony around mid-morning.

I’ve been waiting for something to happen so that I could write about it, but nothing really has, and it’s time I wrote something anyway.
Some things have happened. My social security number arrived, finally – now I can easily take a job, if I ever get offered one. I’ve even …

Redesign

A , posted by Anthony in the early evening.

Tech, pure tech. No news.
I’ve slightly redesigned the blog to look better for those of you who run their computers at 800×600 screen resolution. Now 50% less scrolling! Of course, now I have a big, blank space on the right for everybody else. Hmm…
I’ve started using Blogrolling to manage …

Short entry. Lost $19 playing poker this week. An improvement. Next time I’ll get them…
Thinking about asking if I can intern at C5. I dismissed this out of hand when I arrived, thinking it was essentially a runner position, but apparently that was a little hasty. They don’t really have …

One Month

A , posted by Anthony during lunch time.

I’ve been here one month today, so I suppose it’s a good time for a quick assessment. It’s very worrying. I like New York a lot. Greenpoint is a great area, and I really enjoy living here. There’s a really nice atmosphere, and the people are friendly.
I came with about …

Hallowe’en

A , posted by Anthony in the early evening.

Poker game. Lost $28. Alcohol and poker don’t mix, particularly with the bizarre games and strange wild cards that came up – whatever follows the queen is wild, threes and nines are wild, low card on the board is wild… It was tough to keep track! I had a good …
