Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving was yesterday, as you may or may not know. This has been more irritating for me than anything, as it’s basically shut everyone down for a week. I need forward movement! That job doing a short in C5 has hit a snag – I may well get to do the short, and others, but it probably won’t be in C5. This is nothing to do with me personally, more of a general shift in the company – unfortunate timing. I’ll still get paid, maybe more than I would have otherwise, but it won’t help me in impressing the powers that be within C5, which was really my primary aim. And I won’t find out anything definite at all until at least next week, because of Thanksgiving. At this rate, it’s looking like I won’t have succeeded in earning a single dime before I come home for Christmas. Grrr! And I’ve been told I’m overqualified for the intern position. Which is true. I’m not sure that it’s a good thing.
I spent Thanksgiving at a hipster type party down the road in another part of Willamsburg. The party was thrown by the girlfriend of a friend of Marilyn and Kim’s. (Kim is the girl who’s moving back into the apartment when I leave. She was spending a few nights here in Liza’s room, as Liza went to Florida to stay with her family for the holiday). It was fun. Didn’t know anybody (obviously) and I’m not quite enough of a hipster myself to seamlessly integrate myself into this kind of gathering (they served both Turkey and Tofurkey, and there was a lot of very expressive hair in evidence, facial and otherwise). Started drinking at four, left at about eleven, had a few interesting conversations, met a few interesting people, life remained unchanged. I did get offered a desktop G4 ProTools Digi001 system for $1000, which is a reasonable deal, but I don’t have the money to spare. If I find I’m going to earn more than that in shorts over the next couple of weeks, and the system checks out, I’ll go for it. Otherwise, I won’t. I applied for an American Express credit card, but I was turned down. I suspect this is because I don’t have a credit rating here yet. Or worse, I do. I need yet another way to accumulate debt – it helps make me feel more American.
This is an interesting article. It was written by Lisa Keyes, Julian’s wife, and the previous inhabitant of my room. It’s a bit of perspective on my position. I’ve been around their flat, helping to hammer nails into things and hang them up in time for the parents’ Thanksgiving visit (a mixed success). Julian is the only heterosexual male I know less into this kind of activity than me, so I almost felt competent.
I haven’t been feeling homesick generally, but a show called Insomiac just showed an old episode where they visited Dublin on St. Patrick’s day, and one of the places they went was the Long Hall. I want a pint of Smithwicks in the Long Hall!
And so to the poll:
7 votes for regrouping and taking New York by storm
2 votes for assuming a new identity and proceeding to fight crime
2 votes for assuming a new identity and committing crime
2 votes for pretending all is well, and writing some bad checks
Hmmm… Time for a new one.

First week’s guests included Jessica Alba (good) and Steve O (good) who marked the occasion by exposing himself.
Just had to spend the weekend working. Tons of SFX to add to some reels and I got to remind myself of how bad I am at VFX editing. Ha ha!
