« « It Never Rains…| Full » »Patrick’s Day
Nothing much happened on St. Patrick’s Day, rather disappointingly. The weather was bad – it was cold and windy and snowing – so I couldn’t motivate myself to go to the parade. I spoke to a few people about it, and it seems that it’s really just people walking. They don’t even have floats! They should really get ATA Security in there to get the whole thing going.
I can understand from talking to various Irish-Americans that the parade is important to them in asserting and celebrating their Irish identity, but I reckon since I actually have the accent and the passport I can forego the five hours in the snow.
But I wasn’t going to forego the drinking. I started off at about 4pm in The Scratcher, but it was pretty quiet. Anita, the barmaid there I know, told me it was incredibly quiet compared to previous years. I had a few pints, and headed down to the Eleventh Street Bar, where I was going to meet various people.
I met them, and drank, but the L train was stopping at midnight, and it wasn’t really exciting enough for me to give myself a real headache trying to get home. So I caught the last L, and was in bed by 1am.
Don’t get me wrong, I was fairly drunk, but it wasn’t exactly wild. Getting to bed that early did mean that I was able to come here to the library and write the next day – I had provisionally decided to take it off as “hangover recovery day” – so all’s well I suppose.
In other news, currently 62.5% of you think I should do the movie. You don’t realise quite how much work or quite how stressful that will be, but I’m thinking about it.
I’ve been working on reducing spam for the last couple of days (while not writing). Having a website really makes you a target. Spamassassin came installed on my server, so I’m using that for email spam. I’ve also been using MT-Blacklist to limit comment spam. Now I’m using Junkeater to cut down on Guestbook spam, and taking the advice in this article to deal with referer spam. It’s a wearying business. Spammers should be all dragged into the street and shot like dogs. Right now. I’m serious.
Good news! It seems that Smithwicks is here at last! I actually managed to drink some in a bar last night. Tasted good, but I think I may be too hooked on the Guinness now to really ever return to my previous favourite tipple. Ah, decision, decisions…
