It’s funny! I laughed – pretty consistently! This was good. Ferrell and his cohorts have succeeded in creating a good, old fashioned stupid comedy. Well, mostly stupid. Their real triumph is in creating a gallery of incredibly obnoxious, objectionably smug and self satisfied characters, and having them be incredibly sweet and innocent at the same time.

They do this by taking a world best described by the term “old boys club”, and making it literally be that. The newsroom becomes the treehouse – all friends are best friends, all other treehouse dwellers are rivals, and girls are Not Allowed – and behaviour that in adults would be seen as, well, illegal, is rendered adorable. And funny.

And Ferrell is funny. I should point out that if you don’t think so, you won’t like this movie – the poster is a pretty accurate representation of the movie’s content. He just says the funniest things. A particular favourite would be “We’ve been going to the same party for twelve years now, and in no way is that depressing!” He also gets great mileage out of seemingly innocuous phrases like “When in Rome” and “Well, that escalated quickly”.

Yeah, it’s the kind of movie you quote to others. If you all like it. Because this falls just a little short of being an out and out classic – I was laughing, but it was easy to imagine myself not laughing. It has to hit you right. You have to let it take you – it won’t do it by force. It’s a gentle movie that way.
