« « Sideways| Alexander » »The Incredibles

Another seamless Pixar movie. They have it down. A cast of characters designed to appeal to kids, jokes galore for the adults, and a theme for the whole family – friendship, family, or… Well, pretty much just friendship and family. And duty. And accepting who you are.
And hell, they’re good at it. It’s beautiful to look at, fantastically designed, brilliantly acted and animated, the jokes are funny, and the pacing is absolutely perfect. There’s no point enumerating all the witty moments and details – other, more in-depth reviews have that pretty much covered – but they’re legion. The plot works out perfectly, all the characters have their comeuppance, their arcs, their breakthrough, whatever.
And I guess that’s what left me a little dissatisfied. It’s almost as if there’s no human element at work. Everything is so heavily crafted, carefully turned, finely honed, closely controlled that there isn’t any room to breathe. I’m not saying that this is really a bad thing, or that it makes the film any less than a constant joy. I just find it ironic that while with each generation of computer graphics the depiction of things like hair and foliage grows ever more lifelike, the control that the creators exert seems to drag the movies in the other direction.

In this film, I love the people’s sensation, scene, bugbears. The scene is so sublime.
With the great imagination.
