« « Working Stiff| Decapitation » »How Surprising!
Well, would you look at that. Me all busy and still doing two posts in a week. I have a reason. Two reasons.
- I left some stuff out of the last post I wanted to mention and
- I’ve been sent a meme.
I don’t know how I feel about memes in general, but I’ve succumbed in the past, and I suppose I will again.
But first, the things I missed. I was drunkenly talking to Anne Marie about people at her de-emigration party, and we realised we knew someone in common – the director of a film I had worked on. Then we realised that she was in the film. Then we realise I had actually spoken to her on the phone about three years ago – I recorded her side of a phone call while she was in Heathrow airport. I remember hooking up the cable from the reciever to my DAT recorder, the director talking her through it, doing the conversation three times and then cutting it into the movie. I never made the connection. Small world, eh? And I was even talking to somebody about that very short just a couple of weeks ago.
The other thing was a mild oddity I was hoping some of you may have some theories concerning. I went for lunch with Ian last Monday at a Cuban place near R*. As we turned the corner we noticed a young guy wearing what seemed to be some sort of magician’s cape sitting across the street with a notebook. He looked slightly odd and we speculated fruitlessly. As we waited outside for our order he looked up, crossed the road and started talking to me.
“Excuse me, are you the guy with the Adam Ant pen?”
“Um, no.”
“Are you sure?”
“I don’t think I’ve ever owned an Adam Ant pen.”
“Oh, ok. Sorry.”
He returned to his perch. Here’s a photograph I took of him. The new phone takes a good picture, but the lens is way too wide for this kind of thing.

Well? Anybody care to shed some light?
And so to the meme.
The last CD I bought was:
Actually, it’s been a while. It was “The Best of Public Enemy – The Milennium Collection”. I was working on San Andreas which had a lot of hip hop and rap in it, so I thought I’d give it a whirl. Man, that was last September! I’ve gotta buy some new music.
Song playing right now:
Well, none. I’m not listening to anything right now. The TV is on and I’m slightly watching a massacred-for-tv version of the Farelly Brothers “Me, Myself and Irene”. The last song I listened to was “Backsliders” by Radiohead from the “Hail to the Thief” album on my PSP. It’s a really great album and that’s probably my favourite song on it. That happens to be true, but isn’t it convenient? Imagine if I’d been listening to something I liked but was ashamed of, like the song “You’re Still the One” by Shania Twain. Not that I really like that. Ahem.
Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:
Now this is tough. I’m not really one of these people to whom music is massively important. I like it, but I’m more of a books and movies kind of guy when it comes to media. I actually can’t come up with five songs that really mean something to me, but five songs I listen to a lot:
- “Backsliders” by Radiohead.
Is this cheating? It’s true! It’s probably my favourite song at the moment. I start internally twitching when I hear it.
- “On Broadway” by The Drifters.
It’s a great song, and I confess I still get an enjoyable frisson when it comes up on my MP3 player while I am, in fact, on Broadway.
- “Yellow” by Coldplay.
I used to drive one of my fellow sound editors in Ireland insane by whistling the first few bars of this over and over again without realising it. I don’t listen to it very often and it doesn’t really mean much to me, but it’s always my first choice at Karaoke. Does that count?
- “Tomorrow Never Knows” by The Beatles.
I was a huge Beatles fan as a teenager, and I still think they’re great. I’m not sure if this is my favourite Beatles song, but it’s the best track on their best album (Revolver) so it must be pretty close to the top.
- “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” by Beck.
I really like Beck. Mutations is a great album and this song always goes around and around in my head for a long time after I hear it – in a good way. It’s a good one to harmonise with in the shower.
That was pretty unrevealing, wasn’t it? I’m sorry there were no good anecdotes in there – I just don’t relate to music that way. I’d have more to say about the first time I saw “Raging Bull”, but that ain’t this meme.
Five people to pass this on to, and I promise I won’t feel offended if they choose to give it a miss:
Nigel
Gerry
Julian
Rebecca
Deb
I seem to have selected people whom I have met, four of whom are on Blogspot. Coincidence? You tell me.

I suppose I’m very musical. My wife is still amazed that I can name something like 85 percent of the songs I hear by the first couple bars.

Those sorts of things, in my understanding, are usually done in teams. But until he got his Adam Ant pen, he wasn’t going anywhere, baby!

At 1:04 pm on Sunday 29th 2005f May 2005, Anthony started typing, with this resultI’m the same with movies. I can usually identify them from a few seconds or even a single random frame.
Not so much a “Treasure Hunt” as a “Treasure Wait”, surely? He wasn’t going anywhere. And he singled me out – there were quite a few people waiting around for their Tortas. Maybe it was the hat.
Hmm. Lots of typos in this post, now that I come to read it back. Sorry, everybody! And Nigel has abandoned and deleted his blog, so I’m going to have to pick someone else.
Tomorrow.
